A type of sterol found in the cell membranes of ergot fungi, which is structurally similar to, but can be stereoisomers of, ergosterol; it is a precursor to vitamin D2 when exposed to ultraviolet light. Ergosterol also has various functions in the natural products, pharmaceuticals, and nutraceutical industries because of its importance in ergot fungi.
