oxoacid Definition

An oxoacid is an acid that contains one or more hydroxyl groups (—OH) covalently bonded to oxygen, which in turn is bonded to a nonmetal atom, usually sulfur, phosphorus, or chlorine, or a carbon atom in an organic molecule. The presence of these hydroxyl groups makes oxoacids typically stronger acids than equivalent non-oxoacids.
